"Buck, what's the Open Space Committee all about?"
"Well, Ike, a town-wide survey several years ago found a large majority of Swanzey's residents wanting to maintain Swanzey's rural character: its open fields, working farms, and forested hillsides."
"Good! That means we have a place to live!"
"So folks started the Open Space Committee. They can explain about how conservation easements work. They help everyone decide which land should be protected. They help families that want to protect their land from development."
"Do you think other people in Swanzey want to preserve their land for other oxen like us?"
"Maybe not for oxen, but for bears, bobcats, deer, and moose."
"What can we do to help the Open Space Committee?"
"Just be our charming selves, I guess. Be in The Old Homestead. We were in the Old Home Day parade while we were at our bachelor pad-dock at the Potash Bowl for the play."
"We hadn't been in a parade for years! It was really fun!"
"And mostly, the Open Space Committee likes to have us do personal appearances. Folks like to come see us, and it gives them a chance to learn more about protecting open spaces in Swanzey."
"And we love personal appearances, especially when we can be around children."
"I like the Open Space Committee. They sound like good folks trying to do good work."
